Spring motorcycle checklist: Get your bike road‑ready

A senior man is seen taking his bike out of his garage and getting it ready with a spring motorcycle checklist.

If you own a motorcycle, spring riding season can’t come soon enough. While winter weather may still linger, March is the perfect time to prepare your motorcycle for the road ahead. Use this spring motorcycle checklist to get your bike, gear, and skills ready for spring.

Essential steps to prepare your bike for the road

1.    Remove pests: Small animals and insects often seek shelter in motorcycle airboxes and exhausts during winter. Inspect these areas carefully, remove any pests, and replace the air filter if moisture damage is present.

2.    Change the fluids: Motorcycle fluids can degrade during winter storage. Check oil, coolant, brake, fork, and fuel fluids for discolouration or sludge, and replace fluids, filters, seals, or hoses as needed.

3.    Lubricate moving parts: Inspect the chain or belt for wear, cracks, or stiffness. Degrease and lubricate components, adjust tension to manufacturer specifications, and lubricate clutch and throttle cables for smooth operation.

4.    Test the brakes: Moisture can cause corrosion or seizing. Visually inspect brake pads, rotors, and lines, then walk your motorcycle to confirm proper brake function.

5.    Charge the battery: Cold temperatures can drain motorcycle batteries. Clean terminals, secure connections, test voltage with a multimetre, and recharge or replace the battery if necessary.

6.    Inflate the tires: Check tires for cracks, cuts, punctures, and tread wear. Inspect wheel rims for damage, tighten spokes and nuts, and inflate tires to manufacturer‑recommended pressure for proper road contact.

7.    Check the electrical system: Test all electrical components, including lights, signals, ignition, gauges, and accessories. Replace worn bulbs, fuses, or cables, and keep spare supplies on hand for the riding season.

8.    Start the engine: Starting your motorcycle periodically during winter helps circulate fluids and maintain battery charge. It also allows you to confirm that suspension and mechanical systems are functioning properly.

Preparing your riding gear

Proper riding gear supports comfort and safety. Try on your helmet, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves to ensure proper fit, clean each item, and replace any worn, damaged, or outdated gear.

Getting yourself ride‑ready

  • Sit on your bike. Once your motorcycle is road‑ready, check your riding position. Adjust handlebars, mirrors, shifter, and brake pedal to ensure comfort, balance, and control.
  • Condition your body. Riding demands strength and endurance. Exercises such as lunges, squats, pull‑ups, biking, and running can improve balance and stamina. Maintain a balanced diet to support safe riding all season.
  • Update your riding skills. Review riding fundamentals and refresh safety skills, including hand signals. A rider training course can help build confidence and improve technique, regardless of experience level.
