Winter storage best practices for protecting your boat

Two boats sitting in a winter boat storage lot next to ever green trees. One has a white cover and the other has a blue cover.

Winter can be harsh on a boat, and if you want to get out on the water next spring without any unwelcome surprises, proper storage is essential. Cold water and ice can cause serious damage, and poor winter storage practices can leave your boat vulnerable to theft or storm-related issues.

Failing to winterize a boat engine can lead to freezing or cracking, which can cost upwards of $10,000 to repair!1 And with the rise of specialized technology like navigation devices, cameras, sensors, and auto-docking features, fixing damage has become even more complex and costly. That’s why it’s more important than ever to store your boat properly and perform regular preventative maintenance.

We’ve put together a list of essential winter boat storage tips. When paired with an Orbit marine insurance policy, these best practices can protect your vessel from damage, theft, and unexpected weather. Whether you’re storing your boat at home or at a marina, Orbit marine insurance experts are here to guide you and ensure your coverage fits your needs.

Follow these tips to keep your boat protected this winter:

1.   Inspect your boat and get it serviced

Before you take your boat out of the water, run it one last time and check for anything that might need repair. Winter is ideal for getting your boat serviced, as you won’t lose time on the water.

Plus, check the bellows' rubber seals annually. Worn seals can cause partial or complete sinking of the boat.

2.    Take your boat out of the water

Never leave your boat in the water during winter. Cold water and ice can cause damage, and leaving it vulnerable to winter storms can increase risk.

If you are storing your boat outside, make sure it’s level so the hull doesn’t warp. Avoid storing it under trees, as falling branches can damage your boat.

3.    Clean your boat

Before winter storage, clean your watercraft thoroughly with soap and water. Remove any plant life attached to your hull and clean all its compartments. After it’s dry, wax the hull to keep it in tip-top shape.

4.    Consider having a professional winterize your boat

You might choose to winterize your vessel yourself. However, keep in mind that unless your boat is professionally winterized, your insurance won’t cover any loss, damage, or expense caused by freezing during the lay-up period. That is why we recommend considering professional winterization to ensure your coverage remains intact.

If you go this route, be sure to keep any receipts for the work performed by a certified marine mechanic or marina. These receipts may be required in the event of a claim.

If you decide to winterize your boat yourself, follow the directions in your owner’s manual carefully and ensure your engine is properly winterized. Drain all water from your water tanks, ballast tanks, fuel lines, pipes, and any other areas where water may collect to prevent freezing and potential damage to your boat.

5.    Secure all items and seal your boat

Before storing your boat for winter, remove any valuable items, including electronic guidance systems, to protect them from theft and extreme weather. It’s also a good idea to remove anything prone to mildew and mold, such as flotation devices, cushions, and fabric.

Once you’ve removed all loose items, wrap your boat with a boat wrap and cover it using a custom, snug-fitting waterproof cover. Avoid covers that are too loose or saggy, as they can collect water and become damaged. Remember that even if your boat is stored indoors, a proper cover can protect it from unexpected roof leaks or dust accumulation.

To prevent pests from making a home in your boat, seal any exhaust port or other small openings. If you’re storing your boat on its trailer, lock it and consider removing the tires to make it more difficult for thieves to tow it away.

6.    Check on your boat regularly

Throughout the winter, check your boat's cover for any damage and ensure it is free of pests. Brush off any snow that collects on the cover as well. Once a month, take the cover off and inspect the boat for anything amiss.

Did you know?

If your boat is stored at a marina, you still need insurance.

It’s a common misconception that marina storage automatically means protection. However, that’s not always the case. Say a marina’s storage shed collapses and damages your watercraft, the marina is liable only if it can be proven that its negligence caused the collapse. Or imagine a raccoon making itself at home in your boat over the winter, chewing through wiring and upholstery. Unless the marina’s negligence directly led to the damage, they likely won’t be held responsible. The best way to protect your investment is with a comprehensive 12-month marine insurance policy.

Want to lower the cost of your boat insurance policy?

Choose a higher deductible

One way to lower your insurance policy costs is to choose a higher deductible. By selecting a higher deductible, your premium may be lower. Keep in mind that when you do this, you are accepting more risk and will cover a larger share of the loss yourself. Ask your Orbit marine insurance expert what options are right for you if you are considering this approach.

Stay claims-free

Another way to keep your insurance costs low is to stay claims-free to maximize available discounts. Here are some ways you can remain claims-free on the water:

  • Avoid accidents by navigating and operating safely, and never while impaired
  • Never leave valuables on board
  • Carry safety and emergency equipment
  • Wear approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
  • Know where your boat is
  • Make a trip plan and advise a friend
  • Follow markers and the rules of the water
  • Give a large watercraft extra space

Storage tips to stay claims-free:

  • Use locking devices to immobilize your watercraft stored on a trailer
  • Install satellite monitoring systems to monitor the whereabouts of your watercraft
  • Clear snow and ice to prevent damage
  • Install an alarm system
Consider enrolling in a marine training course

Both for the benefits of learning safe navigation and any discount that your insurance company may offer for completion of such a program. Be sure to check with your Orbit marine insurance broker before enrolling to ensure the course is approved.
