Winter driving: Essential precautions for safe travel on snowy roads

Winter turns our roads into real challenges. Snow, ice, reduced visibility… Every trip requires extra caution. Here are the must-know tips to avoid unpleasant surprises and enjoy a safe winter.

  1. Prepare your vehicle

  • Install quality winter tires in good condition (mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15).
  • Check tire pressure.
  • Fill up with antifreeze windshield washer fluid and make sure your battery is in good condition.
  • Completely clear snow from your vehicle (roof, windows, headlights) before driving. This is crucial for visibility and safety—chunks of ice or snow falling from a moving vehicle can be dangerous for other drivers.
  1. Adjust your driving to conditions

  • Reduce your speed: braking distance can be up to four times longer.
  • Increase the distance between your vehicle and others.
  • Avoid sudden maneuvers and use engine braking on downhill slopes.
  • Turn off cruise control on slippery roads.
  1. Be equipped for the unexpected

  • Keep an emergency kit: blanket, booster cables, shovel, flashlight, snacks.
  • Consider snow chains or socks if driving in mountainous areas.
  1. Anticipate risk zones

  • Bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas are prone to black ice.
  • Check the weather and road conditions before you leave.
  1. If you skid

  • Stay calm: do not brake suddenly.
  • Look in the direction you want to go and steer gently.

Finally, if conditions are extreme, postpone your trip. Safety comes first.
