Here’s what you need to know to make sure you have the best coverage for you and your gear.
It’s easy to have hundreds of dollars of equipment with you on your boat—thousands if your kit includes high-tech items like fish finders or sonar systems.
You’re not the only one wondering if your insurance will cover your gear. Our expert marine insurance brokers get asked this a lot, and they’re here to help.
Boat insurance is recommended for larger motorized boats and personal watercraft vehicles. If you have boat insurance, it will usually cover your:
Your boat insurance policy should protect against:
It should also include liability coverage for injuries.
Boat insurance doesn’t usually cover other equipment that was on board at the time of loss. You would need extra coverage for those items. To find out if your fishing gear may be covered by your home, contents, or renters’ insurance, jump to “Does home insurance cover hunting gear”.
Some boat insurance policies offer Personal Possessions Coverage as an add-on. This is what would protect the fishing gear and belongings you may have on board.
There’s a limit on how much this coverage will pay-out for any one item. Your equipment won’t be insured for anything over the policy's single-item limit.
If you own or are thinking of buying an expensive piece of equipment to use while you’re out on your boat, make sure it’s covered.

Your hunting and fishing gear is usually covered under your home insurance policy’s Personal Property Coverage. This is the same, regardless of whether you have a homeowner, tenant, or condo policy.
If you want to know exactly how much you’re covered for, you’ll have to check your home policy. Make sure you review your individual policy for the exact amount of coverage you have for personal property in case of:
If you ever have to file an insurance claim for your hunting gear, your coverage will be subject to your policy’s Personal Property Deductible.
That means you will have to pay the “deductible” amount that you agreed to in your insurance policy and your insurer pays the rest (up to the maximum amount).
For example:
$500 deductible
$600 claim for stolen equipment
$100 is what you would get back from your insurer.
It’s important to think about how much you’d be able to spend at the time of an insurance claim when choosing your deductible. If you decide on a $1000 deductible instead of a $500 deductible, for example, you may lower your monthly payments—but you will have to pay more in the event of a claim.
Every home insurance policy has a limit on how much it will pay-out for any one item. Your equipment won’t be insured for anything over the policy's single-item limit.
Make sure your expensive gear is covered for its full value. Have your insurance broker list high-value items separately in your policy.
Documenting your hunting and fishing gear is a great idea. Creating an inventory of your gear will help you:
